What They Called Fairness

Valentino battles systemic bias after surviving childhood torture and familial betrayal.

Fifteen-year-old Valentino weighs fifty pounds when the Costellos reclaim him from an adoptive mother who forced him to fight dogs for scraps. Instead of sanctuary, he faces Brett — the boy raised in his place — wielding a knife while their mother embraces the impostor and promises equal love. For three years Valentino endures a closet bedroom, leftover meals, and a ten-kilometer walk to school as Brett enjoys suites, private chefs, and a Rolls-Royce. When the government launches a Fairness System enforcing absolute equality, the family registers Brett first, convinced the program will protect his privilege. The system activates, but the equality it delivers dismantles their world one member at a time.
